My School and Its Culture

A school experienced that shaped my personal identity and a teachable moment was when my 5th grade teacher asked me to help another student with her reading and math because the student was Hispanic and had very little knowledge of how to use English or comprehend it.  The teacher at that time was Mrs. Graves I remember her so well because I asked her why I should help the girl and her statement to me was, “Because I believe in you, you are always helping other students and you are one of my smartest student when it comes to reading and math. All of my other siblings had her in the fifth grade as well and I still believe she choose me because she knew my siblings and had taught them as well.  I do remember my sisters and brothers telling me that she was a very hard teacher and that she makes you earn everything she gives you and that she didn’t give anyone A’s or B’s. That kind of scared me to death knowing that I had a difficult time in the other elementary grades and to go to her just so she could fail me was not an option.
