SHORT ANSWER QUESTIONS (100-200 WORDS)

8. (2.11)
Assume you are in charge of a school. All your classrooms are overcrowded; your students are spilling into portables; your teachers are underpaid, overworked, and unhappy about working conditions; parents are upset; and the mandated, standardized test scores of your students are plummeting at an exponential rate. In short, you have a problem that needs a solution. Using the eight characteristics of research as paragraph headings, formulate a research plan that might help you find at least one solution to your problem.

The purpose of this project is to give you some practice in applying each of the eight characteristics to a problem in a simplified manner. Your response should not be a detailed and exhaustive discussion of the problem. As a guideline, you should not write more than one or two paragraphs per characteristic.
Write a question that would promote research on this problem.
a. As clearly and concisely as possible, articulate a goal for a solution to this problem.
b. Write a detailed research plan of procedure for the goal you have articulated above.
c. Divide the principle problem into manageable sub-problems.
d. Using your responses to the previous questions, formulate a specific research problem, question, or hypothesis. e. List as many of the critical assumptions made by your research as possible.
f. Describe your plan for selecting and interpreting data in an attempt to solve the initial problem.
g. Describe how your research proves or disproves your hypothesis. In addition, list any additional research avenues created by researching the original problem.

9. (4.11)

Question Research projects are born of the needs of individuals, society, science, previous research, and the ideas of other researchers. Most researchers specialize in certain topics and rather restricted areas of study over extended periods of time. The more research one does, the better equipped one is to find legitimate research problems. However, for the beginning researcher, finding a topic and a specific problem to research is a somewhat daunting task. Your text discusses strategies that are often helpful for novice and expert researchers alike (pp. 44 - 52). Please study this section before undertaking this project.

You are to search the Internet for an appropriate research topic within your academic field. Use the various search engines such as http://1.www.google.com , http://www.yahoo.com , http://www.lycos.com , http://www.altavista.com , and other search engines on the Web to help you find a topic. Also check dissertation abstracts at http://proquest.umi.com/login. Read the literature you find and choose a topic while keeping in mind what your text has to say about the process (pp. 44 - 46). When you have determined your topic, locate at least five Websites that offer information, papers, and other links related to your topic.

Once you have completed your literature review, write a statement or question that identifies your topic. For example, if your interest is on organizational culture, you might phrase your topic as a question such as: What is the effect of management style on organizational culture? Once your statement or questions is developed, list five URL's you have identified that support your topic. Provide a paragraph annotation for each URL and upload your work to Blackboard.

10. (4.D)

Discuss the advantages and disadvantages of establishing a schedule for preparing a research proposal in which you break each task into small easily doable steps.

11. (7.D)

Assume you have data that falls in a normal distribution that reflects an ordinal scale. Would it be appropriate to use parametric or nonparametric procedures to analyze these data? Defend your response

12. (8.D)

Why is it important that the first section of a research report create a meeting of minds between the writer and reader of the report? List several reasons to support your response.

13. (6.11)
Search the Web for sites that provide information and resources about survey research. List the URL’s of 10 sites that provide information about doing survey research or provide data for doing survey research. Provide a brief annotated bibliography for each URL.

14. (8.12)

This exercise requires you to use an electronic spreadsheet, such as Microsoft's Excel, to compute information about a data set. The data set is shown in Table 1 below. There are three groups in the complete data set:
1. Group 1—Learning via the Lecture method of instruction
Group 2—Learning via the Cooperative method of instruction
Group 3—Learning via Computer-based instruction
The scores in each group are the final examination scores of students in the three groups. The scores represent overall knowledge learned under each method of instruction. The higher the score, the more knowledge learned. The Independent and Dependent variables are:
Independent variable - the method of instruction at three levels: Lecture, Cooperative, and Computer.
Dependent variable - the final examination score.

2 78 45 77
