Greek art and culture is seen as the beginning of western ideas and cultural characteristics.  Their art can be seen in four general periods.

Geometric Period -  c.800 – 600BCE

Pottery decorated with geometric designs is common and defines this period. Funerary Vase w/Funery Scene, Dipylon, 8th century BCE,  The Amphora – c. 750BCE

Evidence of concept for visual relationships and design begins at this time.

Archaic Period – c.600 – 500BCE

Stone material used for architecture and sculpture, trade with Egypt possible influence for this.

Stone sculptures of the human figure are created and figures are rigid and static.  Figures are portrayed with unusual smile, today referred to as “Archaic smile”.  Pottery advances made including style known today as black figure ware,. Francois Vase c.570BCE. Exekias, The Suicide of Ajax c. 540BCE, red figure ware examples- Pan Painter “Artemis Slaying Actaeon”, Foundry Painter, “A Bronze Foundry”.  Architecture develops style known as Doric style, that seeks ideal proportions.  Kouros, 600bce, and Kore, 530bce, sculptures.

Classical Period  480 – 330 BCE

Divided into Early, High, and Late Classical periods based on characteristics that change as the artworks reflect, and evolve with, the concerns of Greek culture.

The “Golden Age of Pericles” c. 450 – 400 BCE is regarded as the high point in Greek art and the Idealism and Naturalism reflected in the artworks are integrated with a conscious intent toward harmony, unity, and beauty.  Man is the measure of all things, and the human, especially male, figure is used as subject to depict artworks where parts are unified to a whole, in harmony, and nothing is shown to be excessive or gross. Pericles is the important leader of Athens during this time and he is responsible for the commission of these great worksImportant works:  Discus Thrower c. 450 BC,Kritios Boy c. 480BCE, Young Warrior (Riace, Italy) c.460 BCE, Spearbearer c.440 BC ( Contrapposto, Composition, Idealized Form), The Three Goddesses c. 440 BC, Hermes and Dionysos c. 330 BC, The Scraper c. 330 BC( breaks into three dimensional space), Acropolis (Athens), Parthenon c. 440 BC ( Doric style), Temple of Athena Nike c. 425 BC (Ionic style), Erechtheion c. 420 BC (Caryatids), Greek theater c. 350 BC.

Hellenistic Period 330 – 150 BCE
