One of the newest companies to enter the auto industry is Tesla. A company founded on the purpose to create electric-powered vehicles that will outperform gas powered (Tesla, 2016). In this paper, we will discuss an overview of the company, their product, and their marketing strategy. We will also examine and discuss the external factors that influence the company's target market with examples of these communications that allow them to reach their consumers. Background and Overview Tesla Motors is a technology and design automaker based in Fremont, California specializing in the manufacturing and selling of electric based products. At the core of Tesla is innovation in renewable energy with the goal of ushering the world into sustainable, eco-friendly mobility. The founding engineers believed electric cars could outperform their gasoline-powered counterparts. The Tesla Roadster sports car set a new standard in electric transport with speeds up to 60 mph in 3.7 seconds and a range of 245 miles per charge of its lithium-ion battery (Tesla Motors, 2016). An AC induction motor designed by Nikola Tesla from whom the company derives its name inspired the powertrain. The Model S, the world's first premium 100 percent electric sedan holds up to seven passengers and contains 64 cubic feet of storage space according to Tesla Motors (2016). The Model 3 sedan is Tesla’s latest and most affordable car to date with a price tag of $35,000 – far below the industry average for a premium electric vehicle. Designed with the highest degree of safety, the Model 3 boasts 215 miles of range per charge, seats five adults, and comes with autopilot hardware. Pre-orders have already reached 373,000 as of July 2016 making it one of the most eagerly anticipated vehicles ever.
